Welcome to the School of Geosciences!

"Value for our students, community, and society"

Our school combines the programs of Geology and Environmental Science, leveraging the strengths of both to provide unique opportunities and value for our students. The School of Geosciences is dedicated to education and research focused on Energy and the Environment. This sharp focus, celebrates our history in petroleum geology, reflects our core strengths, and addresses the needs of our region.

Recent News:

The School of Geosciences consists of 13 full-time faculty and instructors, approximately 100 undergraduate majors and 60 graduate students. We offer separate B.S. degrees in Geology and Environmental Sciences and a M.S. degree in Geology (with petroleum and environmental focus areas). The school of Geosciences, partnering with the Department of Physics, is also building an interdisciplinary PhD program that will focus on fundamental research associated with Energy, the Environment, and Earth Physics.

Our approach to research and education is simple. We strive to deliver maximum value for our students, our community, and society. We do this by embracing our core strengths and taking advantage of our unique location to address some of societys grand challenges, the sustainability of energy and environmental resources. A large majority of our graduate students (and a large number of undergraduates) find exciting hands-on opportunities through internships with a wide variety of petroleum companies, local engineering and environmental firms, and state and federal agencies.

We set high standards for our program while remaining one of the most affordable institutions in the United States. 2012 is the second year in a row that the University of Louisiana at Lafayette was rated as one of the nations best institutions for undergraduate education (2013 edition of The Best 377 Colleges published by The Princeton Review). The Princeton Review states, tremendously generous grant and scholarship programs and out of state fee waivers make UL Lafayette one of the best bargains in the country.  The U.S. Department of Educations College Affordability and Transparency list also ranked UL Lafayette among the top 10 percent of most affordable universities in the United States.

If you are interested in research and problem-solving in the fields of energy and/or the environment, and you demand value in your education, come and join us!  E-mail us for an application and more information about our programs.
